Promotion and tenure are granted by the Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the president. The president is advised on such matters by the dean of faculty and the Promotion and Tenure Subcommittee. The committee will meet with any faculty member who is under active consideration and who requests such a meeting. The deliberations of the committee are confidential.

Evaluation of those whose primary responsibility is teaching is based on teaching effectiveness, professional achievement within the field(s), and service to Linfield, their profession and the community. Evaluation of librarians is based on professional effectiveness, professional achievement, and service to Linfield, their profession and the community.

Teaching effectiveness is evaluated by students, colleagues and the department chair. Professional achievements are evaluated by colleagues and by the department or program chair. Service to Linfield, oneʹs profession and the community is evaluated by colleagues and by the department chair. Self-appraisals by the faculty member concerned will also be used to evaluate all three areas.

Please refer to Faculty Handbook Section IV.6 for more information regarding the promotion and tenure process and requirements.
