Disability and Inclusion
Learning Support Services is committed to promoting the full inclusion of those with disability identities. As part of inclusion efforts, LSS provides this resource as an opportunity to name ableism and encourage all community members increase their individual awareness of the diverse learning community that thrives at Linfield University.
Ableism
Ableism is the discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief those that do not experience disability our superior. At its heart, ableism is rooted in the assumption that disabled people require ‘fixing’ or cannot succeed equally in society. Like racism and sexism, ableism classifies entire groups of people as ‘less than,’ and includes harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and generalizations of people with disabilities.1
Inclusion
LSS is committed, along with campus partners, to address ableism in all of its forms. The office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) offers programming and resources to ensure for all students in the Linfield Community. Linfield Student Policy Guide includes anti-harassment policies that specifically protect those with an experience of a disability.
Learning Support Services staff is available to consult with students, faculty, and staff on issues related to accessibility. In addition to consultation, LSS staff can provide training and awareness resources upon request. Please contact us at lss@linfield.edu for information.
