What to expect at a consultation

At the Writing Center, walk-ins are always welcome. Making an appointment, however, will ensure you have the best experience we can offer.

When you come in for a consultation, you'll sit with a trained student who is eager to work with you. A section of your paper (short story, poem, etc.) will be read allowed. This helps you and your assistant engage, learn and revise better together.

Each session is about 30 minutes long. At the end of the session, a short electronic summary of the session will be filled out by the Writing Center assistant. It will include any suggested next steps. At this time, the Writing Center can customize the document to be sent to your email as well as any professors as proof of your visit to the Writing Center.

For the most successful visit:

Come prepared.

  • Bring one or two copies of the paper you're working on, preferably printed out, but on your computer is OK, too.
  • Bring your assignment sheet.
  • Bring a willingness to learn.

Don’t wait.

Our doors are open, and we are excited to help. By making an appointment early, we can help you brainstorm and revise BEFORE the paper is due! You will benefit much more from a session if you have time to revise and learn rather than rush through the process the day the assignment is due.

Come with specific questions.

We highly recommend that you identify a section to work on. If you don’t have a paper yet, don’t worry! We can also help define your ideas by asking a few questions of our own to help you get started.
