Tips for using video and audio media in courses

  • Link to or embed videos that are already uploaded legally to another site. Linking to another site rather than uploading the video on our server reduces time and server space. Note that linking to videos uploaded by someone other than the copyright owner can lead to contributory infringement.
  • Place embedded and linked videos contextually in your course.  Instead of having a list of videos the students are to watch, place each video in the lesson or unit you want them to watch it.
  • Make sure the media content serves a pedagogical purpose.  Media that does not add specific educational value distracts students and makes it more difficult for them to learn.
  • When using copyrighted videos, not legally available on another website, work with the library to adhere to Fair Use.  This may involve purchasing a limited use license, selecting a small portion of the video, and/or limiting the amount of time the video is accessible to students
  • Attribute the known copyright holder and creator of the media, as you would any written text.
