Copyrighted Media

Requesting uploads of copyrighted/licensed materials:

Streaming media for your course can provide your students with resources and examples they might only otherwise be able to see in a face-to-face classroom environment. We can help you upload a fair use portion or, if we have streaming rights, the entirety of a video or audio file to our streaming server. On this page you will find information about streaming media for educational purposes.

  • Can full-length copyrighted works be streamed?

    Uploading a full-length copyrighted DVD is a process, starting with contacting kaltura@linfield.edu. Know what copyrighted material you want to use. We will then look into if we have streaming rights for the DVD or if we are able to obtain them.

    If you have already obtained permission for streaming you will need to share that with us.

    Other options to consider:

    • Is it possible to have the students obtain their own copies of the full-length movie?
    • Is the cost low enough that it could be considered a class text to purchase or rent?
    • Available options to purchase full-length videos include Amazon, iTunes, and others; you can also rent full-length videos from Amazon, iTunes, Netflix, and other companies (but read the fine print to see if there are any licensing restrictions on classroom usage).
    • There is also Summit and interlibrary loan (ILL). Depending on the video, your distance students may have access to a public library that owns the video, or they might be able to request a copy through Summit or ILL.
    • Include the titles and year of the movie (Star Wars 1977) on your syllabus so students know what to look for, and give your students time to explore options.

  • Can a video be uploaded from my own collection?

    Any media you would like to be uploaded needs to be from a legally obtained copy, owned or licensed by the Linfield Libraries. If we do not own a copy of the media you would like to upload, we can look into purchasing a copy for the collection. If you own a copy it can be brought in. If it is a copy of your own original work you hold the rights to that works fine.

  • What is the process to get items onto Kaltura and connect to Blackboard?

    Contact kaltura@linfield.edu for more information and tell us what you are thinking of doing. We will respond with what we need to know to get your request processed. The information you give us will help us upload the files to the streaming server and connect them to your course. You will need to put a Kaltura Mashup in your course where you would like your students to be able to access all media linked to your course. (See link for how to)

  • What information do I need to provide?

    • Your name
    • Department
    • Course ID(s) the uploaded media should be linked to
    • Title, Director, Year, Call number of the media you need
    • Start and stop times of the clips you need
    • Dates the media is needed to be available on the server
    • Is it currently in the Linfield Library collection?
    • Pedagogical reason for using the clip?
    • Can the subtitles be on for accessibility? (if from a DVD)

  • How long will it take to get my files or video loaded onto Kaltura?

    Please make your requests well in advance; allow a minimum of 1 week. It is possible it could take more or less time based on how many requests we have. If we do not own a copy of the video or audio and the library needs to purchase the item it could take significantly longer, 6-8 weeks.

    Please post a notice for your students that the course includes some material under copyright. This notice should be placed on your main course page or syllabus and near the copyright material.

  • How long will the media be available on Kaltura?

    As part of putting media online, we will ask when you need the media up and when you will be finished with it. There may be fair use limitations on how long your media can remain on the server as well. Copyrighted media being used under fair use will be taken down at the end of the academic year. Any originally created work by you is left up until you remove it.

  • Some of my files are showing in Blackboard but others aren’t. What could be happening?

    If some files are showing in the media gallery on Blackboard but not others, there are a few possibilities.

    1. The file might not be uploaded yet or could be deactivated for end of use date.
    2. An error occurred when linking the files from the streaming server and we didn’t catch it. Please let us know at kaltura@linfield.edu
