F-1 maintaining status

Students in F-1 status are required to do the following in order to maintain their status:

  • Pursue a full course of study
  • Make normal progress towards completing your course of study
  • Keep your I-20 valid
  • Keep your passport valid
  • Work only as authorized

Pursue a full course of study

  1. Enroll in at least 12 credits each term (fall & spring)
  • Online courses - a maximum of one online course (3 credits) may be applied toward the full-time enrollment requirement each semester.  Linfield allows students to take one online course per semester.  However, students enrolled in ELCP courses may not take an online course until they have fully exited ELCP.
  • Eligibility for a reduced course load
  • There are a few rare situations that allow students to enroll in few credits one time per degree.  See the Reduced Enrollment Request Form for more information.

Make normal program toward completing your course of study

  1. Program End Date
  • Line 5 of your I-20 lists your program end date.  This is the last date you are eligible to pursue your program of study.  All bachelor's degrees at Linfield are estimated to be completed in 4 years.
  • Program end dates may be extended for academic or medical reasons.  You must file for an extension with the IPO before the end date listed on your I-20. When you submit your extension request, you must provide financial documentation showing your ability to support yourself for the duration of the extension.   See the Extension of I-20 Form and Cost of Attendance for more information.
  • Minimum Academic Requirements
  • Linfield students are required to maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA.  See the Linfield Catalog for more information on Academic Standing.
  • If an international student is suspended or expelled, their F-1 status will be negatively impacted and will need to leave the U.S or transfer schools.

Keep your I-20 valid

  • Changing Major: If you change your major at Linfield, you are required to report this to the IPO
  • Transferring Schools: If you will be transferring to a new school in the U.S., you will need to arrange to have your SEVIS (I-20) record transferred to the new school.  The new school will be able to issue your new I-20 once your record has been released from Linfield. To have your record released, you will need to send a formal request to dherlocker@linfield.edu or ipo@linfield.edu providing the name and location of the school where you wish your record to be transferred and the date of requested transfer. A copy of your admissions/acceptance letter should be included in your request.
  • Report Address Change: If you move while living in the United States (move off campus for example), you will need to update your address with the IPO within ten days of the move.

Keep your Passport Valid

  1. You are required to keep your passport valid while in the U.S. If it will be expiring within 6 months, you will want to contact your embassy to inquire about the steps of having it renewed.

Authorized Work

  1. F-1 students are eligible to work up to twenty hours per week on campus. During school breaks, they are eligible to work more than twenty hours.
  2. F-1 students cannot work off campus, unless they have authorization through IPO (CPT) or USCIS (OPT, Economic Hardship).
