J-1 maintaining status

Students in J-1 status are required to do the following in order to maintain their status (note, this information is only for J-1 student , not J-1 scholars or researchers).

Pursue a full course of study

  • Enroll in at least 12 credits each term (fall & spring)
    • There are a few rare situations that allow students to enroll in few credits one time per degree. Please meet with the International Programs Office (IPO) to see if you qualify
    • Online courses - No online courses can be counted towards your full time enrollment. Make sure you are enrolled in twelve credits of face to face classes.

Make normal progress toward completing your course of study

  • Program End Date
    • Line 3 of your DS-2019 lists your program end date. This is the last date you are eligible to pursue your program of study. All bachelor's degrees at Linfield are estimated to be completed in 4 years.
    • Program end dates may be extended for academic or medical reasons. You must file for an extension with the IPO before the end date listed on your DS-2019.
  • Minimum Academic Requirements
    • Linfield students are required to maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. See the Linfield catalog for more information on Academic Standing.
    • If an international student is suspended or expelled, their immigration record will be negatively impacted.

Keep your DS-2019 valid

  • Changing Major
    • J-1 students who change their major will need a new DS-2019.  Please meet with the IPO to obtain your new DS-2019.
  • Report Address Change
    • If you move you will need to update your address with the IPO to have your I-20 updated.

Employment

  • J-1 students cannot work off campus without prior authorization from their sponsor (normally Linfield) or USCIS.
  • On campus employment must be authorized by International Programs on a yearly basis.
  • On-Campus employment is part of Linfield financial aid so exchange students receiving tuition waivers would not be eligible for any on campus positions
