About the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Student

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Student is designed to remind students, even on the hardest days in nursing school, why they chose nursing as a profession. By recognizing nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families, we celebrate what it truly means to be a nurse. We honor the nurse-patient connection that makes all the difference to patients and their families in their health care experience and that makes great nurses truly great.

How to nominate a student

Student nomination form

Patients, families, visitors, staff, co-workers, peers, physicians, preceptors and faculty may nominate a deserving Linfield nursing student in the BSN, MSN or RN-BSN program.

Criteria for nomination include:

  1. Demonstrates commitment to compassionate care of patients and families
  2. Demonstrates the desire to pursue exceptional skills and knowledge
  3. And makes a connection with faculty and peers by building trust and respect inside and outside of the classroom

The student nomination form asks for the student’s name, whether they are a BSN student, MSN student or online RN-BSN student and for a specific story about this student nurse’s exceptional skill and compassionate care. Specifically for RN-BSN students, the nomination form will ask the person nominating the nurse to describe how advancing their education to earn their BSN is impacting their nursing practice. An expanding box is included for your specific narrative story, which should include the ways the nominee has met all three of the above criteria for this nomination.

The deadline for nominations is April 22, 2022

Award honorees

Each DAISY Award for student honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony once a year each spring and will receive: a beautiful certificate as well as a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch.”

Family, friends, alumni, peers and community partners are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony. The 2022 ceremony will be held during National Nurses Week in May. Details will be posted closer to the event.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died (at the age of 33) from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Patrick’s family was very touched by the remarkable compassion and clinical skill demonstrated by Patrick’s nurses during his illness, so they created DAISY to recognize exceptional nurses everywhere.
