Social Work/Human Services Track in Sociology

Students interested in pursuing careers in social work/human services are encouraged to cater the sociology curriculum to their specific needs and career interests. We offer the following recommendations:

Sociology Major Requirements (40 credits) Social Work/Human Services Track
SOAN 040: Community Service Gain hands-on experience in a social service organization that reflects an area of specific interest to you while addressing a community need.
SOAN 085: Exploring Sociology & Anthropology Explore social work/human services career options, and develop an educational plan that will help you to work toward your desired career outcomes.
SOCL 101: Understanding Our Social World Develop your “sociological imagination” and a better understanding of critical issues such as social inequality.
SOAN 307: Social Research Methods Learn about research design, data collection, and data analysis (critical skills in most social work/human services professions). Explore a topic related to your professional interests through the applied research project(s).
SOAN 385: Seminar: Social Theory Examine the major intellectual currents leading to the development of the sciences of culture, society, and human social behavior, and consider the ways in which you can apply this information to your future career. Choose a topic for your final paper that will advance your understanding of a key social issue.
Additional 300-Level Course Select a course that best matches your future career goals. Consider one of the following:
  • SOAN 330: Community and Society
  • SOCL 335: Sociology of Education
  • SOAN 365: Urban Society and Culture
SOAN 485/486 Senior Pro-seminar: Theory and Practice Reflect on where you have been and where you are headed, strengthen your professional skills, and prepare for graduate school/job applications/interviews. Complete an applied project that will allow you to explore your area of interest and showcase your abilities.
400-Level MWI Seminar Investigate a wide range of social problems—such as poverty, crime, healthcare, and drug use—and learn to evaluate the social policies intended to address them in SOAN 470: Society, State, and Social Policy.
Elective Courses Select courses that best match your future career goals. We offer a wide range of elective options, such as:
  • SOCL 201: Crime, Deviance, and Social Control
  • SOAN 205: Gender and Society
  • SOAN 232: Medicine and Society
  • SOAN 250: Environment, Society, and Culture
  • SOAN 265: Race and Ethnicity
  • SOAN 270: Latinas and Latinos in the U.S.
  • SOCL 297: Topics in Applied Sociology and Social Work
  • SOAN 280: Families in Comparative Perspective

Other Recommendations:

  • While not required, students who are interested in social work/human services are strongly encouraged to complete an internship.
  • If you are planning to attend graduate school, consider taking a course in statistics (some programs require statistics as a prerequisite).
