Pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree

Many sociology majors choose to purse a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree after graduating from Linfield University. Sociology faculty members, as well the fantastic team in the Office of Career Development, can assist you in (1) finding a program that is right for you and (2) guiding you through the application process.

Planning Ahead

MSW programs seek a wide range of characteristics in their applicants. While application requirements for each program differ, the following criteria are commonly mentioned:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
  • Academic strength/success
  • Background in the liberal arts (check potential perquisites for each program)
  • Passion for and commitment to helping others

Check each program’s website for specific information about the characteristics they seek in applicants.

The Application Process

While specific application processes vary by school, most allow you to apply online. In addition, you will likely be asked to submit the following application materials:

  • Program application form (and fee, if applicable)
  • Official transcripts
  • Resume
  • Personal statement and/or responses to personal essay questions
  • Letters of reference and/or reference forms
