How to Make a Podcast Using GarageBand on Macintosh

Step 1: In a Mac, on the sidebar, look for the brown electric guitar icon. This is the icon for GarageBand. Click it to open. If the icon is not there, then go to Macintosh HD on the desktop. On the left click Applications and scroll down until you find GarageBand with the same icon.

Step 2: Now that you’ve opened the application, it will prompt you with a few choices. Click New Podcast Episode with the icon of a little purple man.

Step 3: Next it will ask you to name your project and where you want to save it. Please keep note of where it will be saved. If you do not like the location of your soon to be saved file, click the blue arrow that points down and find a place that will be easy to find. Once you have named your file, click Create.

Step 4: Now you should see five different bars used for recording. By hitting the circle button, you can begin recording sounds that are appropriate for each bar. For example, Radio Sounds can be sound effects and the Podcast Track can be used for Real Instruments, if you play an instrument that can be somehow connected to your Macintosh. Once you are finished recording hit the play button.

Step 5: Preview what you just recorded by dragging the top triangle to the beginning of your recorded track and hit the play button. Hitting the play button again will stop it. If you do not like what you just recorded, make sure your track is selected and hit the larger delete button. To delete an entire bar, hold the Apple button next to the space bar and hit the same delete button.

Step 6: To make your recorded voice sound the best, go to Control on the top menu bar and make sure Ducking is checked. This will automatically reduce music volume while you are talking. Also, if there are other interferences with your voice, go the bottom right grey arrow next to Details. Click that and you should find all sorts of sound enhancers including echo.

Step 7: You can also use files that you did not record yourself such as sound effects. Browse the internet for various sound files. Save these files to a place where you can find them. Once you have them saved you can insert them into your project by locating your sound effect and clicking and dragging the file into the appropriate track using the mouse.

Step 8: Another good thing to know is splitting the track. For example, if the recording you made was too long, find the exact place where you would like to edit it. Then hold the Apple button and then hit the letter T. Or go to Edit on the menu bar and click Split. Now you have two different tracks. Delete the one you do not want.

Step 9: After you have finished your project go to File and Save. When you reopen GarageBand and want to work on the same file, make sure you open it by clicking “Open Existing Project” or going to File and then Open.
