LAB Summit returns

Linfield's Learning Across Boundaries (LAB) annual LAB Summit returns to campus April 3-6, 2023 with the theme “How can we break academic norms to foster inclusion?”

2023 schedule of events

LAB Talks and Keynote

Monday, April 3, 6-8 p.m.
Ice Auditorium

Open to all Linfield and McMinnville community members.

LAB Talks features Linfield faculty, staff and students, plus community members, giving TED-style talks on the Summit theme, “How can we break academic norms to foster inclusion?”

Speakers include:

  • Kena Avila, associate professor in education
  • Salma Galvan '23
  • Jewls Griesmeyer Krentz, associate director of Learning Support Services
  • Sara Linnertz, McMinnville High School counselor
  • Cecilio Peña Anaya '24
  • Gennie VanBeek, interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences
  • Shayla Wacker '23

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Asao Inoue, will discuss ways of fostering inclusive language in literacy-based classrooms, including writing intensive STEM-courses, by breaking the ways we’ve conventionally done assessment of language in such courses. Inoue discusses the ways our habits of language and judgment can create barriers for inclusion of BIPOC students and students with disabilities, as well as neurodivergent students. He offers a course-based assessment theory that provides a framework for breaking past assessment practices and redesigning new assessments toward inclusion, universal design and social justice. The session will end with a 30-minute Q&A period.

We would love for you to join us at the event!

Registration required by April 2!

"How to talk to a professor about..." Interactive Workshop and Lunch

Tuesday, April 4, 12-1 p.m.
Fred Meyer Lounge

Open to Linfield students only.

Advocating for yourself about something deeply personal can be hard, especially when talking to your professor. Students who feel uncomfortable discussing sensitive subjects with their professors can get help and ideas within a supportive environment. There will be specialists available to cover mental health, being BIPOC, being queer, and holding conservative political viewpoints.

Come eat a delicious lunch and gain confidence when approaching your professors to talk about personal topics. Lunch from Chipotle will be provided.

Space is limited! Registration is first come first serve. Save your spot by April 2.

Trauma Stewardship Workshop for Faculty

Wednesday, April 5
Zoom

For Linfield faculty only.

The pandemic has been hard on students, and we are seeing a shift in how students show up and engage with their coursework. As faculty try to reach students and offer support, we can often end up burning out ourselves. Join us on Zoom to learn about how to provide help and structure to students, while managing your own trauma. Attendees will receive $100 stipends.

Zoom information will be provided in your registration confirmation.

Register for the faculty workshop.

Student Pitches

Thursday, April 6, 12-1 p.m.
