Linfield's Social Media Policy

These guidelines are designed to help Linfield University employees or others (students, volunteers, consultants) who are managing Linfield-branded social media accounts make appropriate decisions. Additionally, they are intended to advise Linfield employees who indicate an institutional affiliation on their personal social media profiles about how to balance their affiliation with personal conversations.

If there is a conflict between guidance in this document and language in university policies or handbooks, the policies and handbooks control. 

Moreover, this document is designed to map out general considerations and does not provide specific guidance on planning, content, measurement or other topics related to the successful management of a social media account.

Simple guidelines for members of the Linfield University social media community

Use these as you participate on Linfield-hosted social networks or online in your official capacity tied to the university.

  • Be transparent. Be honest about who you are. Clearly identify yourself and fully disclose any affiliation you may have with Linfield; this can be a simple reference in your bio or in an online statement. When referencing Linfield online, make it clear that you’re sharing your personal opinion and are not communicating on behalf of the university. A simple example of a disclaimer is “I work for Linfield University. Thoughts shared here are my own.”
  • Protect personal information. For safety and security reasons, please refrain from posting any personal contact information (home and cellphone numbers, mailing or home addresses, personal email addresses, license plates, etc.) on social media sites – yours or someone else’s. Remember that everything you post on social media is public and can live on forever, and could have impacts on privacy and safety.
  • Respect intellectual property laws. Adhere to laws governing copyright and fair use of copyrighted material owned by others, including Linfield’s own copyrights, trademarks and brands. Personal webpages and social media accounts (of faculty, staff or students) may not use Linfield logos, seals or other campus trademarks. In the spirit of sharing on social networks, it’s best to link to others’ work and give them the proper credit, rather than to reproduce it.
  • Avoid endorsements. We encourage you to use social media to share information about your work at Linfield. However, any advertising, solicitation or overtly favorable acknowledgments or endorsements of third-party products and services is not permitted from university accounts, except with express written permission of the university. 
  • Stay on topic. It can be difficult and frustrating for users to find information and/or to meaningfully contribute to the discussion when there is too much additional commentary unrelated to the topic of the posting.
  • Inspire dialogue. We strive to create an online environment that is welcoming, mutually respectful and inclusive, consistent with the university’s mission. Civil and respectful dialogue promotes productive conversations with different ideas and points of view. You are free to discuss and disagree with others regarding topics relevant to the purpose of the social media platform, but please don’t use ethnic and racial slurs, hateful speech, personal attacks, abusive language, nudity or pornography. If participating on the Linfield social media channels, be aware of our comment policy and our right to remove content that violates it.
  • Know the policies and procedures related to social media. Linfield reserves the right to block or remove the content of any post that violates university policies. 

We reserve the right to delete comments or posts that:

  • Advocate illegal activity
  • Are clearly off topic
  • Are excessive in frequency
  • Are abusive, harassing or contain threats
  • Contain defamation, nudity, obscenity, offensive comments that target or disparage an individual or group of individuals, personal attacks, threats of physical or bodily harm, profanity, sexual or violent imagery, spam comments or vulgarity
  • Infringe on copyrights or trademarks
  • Publicly share private or identifying information about an individual for the purpose of harassment
  • Link to inappropriate sites
  • Promote outside products or services or contain advertising
  • Violate a state or federal law, university policy or social media channels' community terms of service
  • Contain spam

We also reserve the right to block individuals who do not follow these guidelines or are repeat offenders.

Privacy

Use of any Linfield University social media page is strictly voluntary. There is no legal requirement for you to follow, comment or like any Linfield page. Any Linfield student, employee or other individual who follows, comments or likes our social media pages does so voluntarily and with no expectation of privacy as to what is posted, followed, commented upon or liked. Linfield may use information that you post on our social media pages for engagement or fundraising purposes.
