Linfield employees: Office 365 for Education is optional as you can still use your current Office program on your Linfield computer. However, you can now use Office 365 on your home computer without purchasing a version through the Microsoft Home Use Program. If you decide to utilize Office 365 for Education, your subscription will expire when you are no longer employed by Linfield University, which is also when your Linfield email address becomes invalid.
Linfield students: your subscription to Office 365 for Education will expire 6 months after graduation (or 6 months after withdrawing), which is also when your Linfield email address becomes invalid.
Before your Office 365 for Education plan expires:
- You can use Microsoft’s free online version of Office (www.office.com) to create and modify your Office documents. You will need to create your own Microsoft account, and then move your Office 365 documents to your personal OneDrive.
- You can purchase the latest version of Office (from any vendor) and install it on your computer. You can move your Office 365 documents to your computer where they can be easily accessed. If you choose this option, be sure and have a backup plan in place for your documents in case your computer is lost or becomes damaged.
When your Office 365 for Education plan expires:
- The Office applications enter a reduced-functionality mode, which means that you can view documents, but you cannot edit or create new documents.
- Online services associated with the school email address - for example, Office Online and OneDrive for Business - will no longer work.
Data retention: OneDrive for Business only stores the most recent version of a document, not the complete history like desktop versions do. So accessing earlier drafts is no longer an option. In addition, the recycle bin only stores documents for 90 days should you need to retrieve a deleted document.
