Applying for Admission to the Portland campus

All students interested in applying to Linfield's traditional BSN program must apply through the NursingCAS online platform. Once the desired application becomes available, students can access it through NursingCAS. For specific application timelines, please refer to the chart at the bottom of this page.

We encourage students to wait to submit their application until after their most recent grades have been posted, as long as they can meet the application deadline.

Linfield students who intend to apply to nursing school should also declare their Pre-Nursing program by submitting a Declaration of Academic Program form on Etrieve.

All prelicensure nursing applicants will apply for admission using NursingCAS, the centralized application system for nursing programs. The NursingCAS Applicant Help Center provides helpful resources to further guide you through the application process.

Step 1. Use Chrome or Firefox and open NursingCAS and click on the drop-down menu to select the term for which you are seeking admission and click on “Apply”. Create an application account and once confirmed, you can “Start Your Application”. Use the filter and search for Linfield University. Only available applications currently open will show. Click on the program name and review the description so you know you’re applying to the correct program. Return to “Continue to My Application” and complete all sections and questions. You may save your information and return to the application anytime while in progress.

NOTE:  If you have previously applied, you must use the same login information.

Step 2. Complete each section within the four parts of the NursingCAS Application.

    • Part 1-Personal Information
    • Part 2: Academic History – Report all colleges and universities you have and are currently attending, even if you withdrew from the institution.

  • Requesting a Letter of Recommendation through NursingCAS

All applicants will be required to obtain at least one professional letter of reference from someone who can speak positively about their potential as a nurse/nursing student. The process of requesting a letter of recommendation will be done completely through the NursingCAS applicant portal, although it is highly recommended that students reach out to their reference(s) before sending the letter request through NursingCAS. The process of requesting a letter of reference through NursingCAS is detailed below:

    4. Click ' Request Letter Upload and Licker Scale Rating References'
    5. Input your reference's personal information (name, email, phone)
      1. You will also be given the option to attach a personal message to the email request
    6. Check the required permissions boxes (right to waive access of reference letter, permission for NursingCAS to contact your reference, and permission for the school to contact your reference)
    7. Click 'Save this Reference Request' to automatically send the email request to your reference
    8. Confirm with your reference(s) that they received the email from NursingCAS

  • Tips for Requesting a Letter of Recommendation

In addition to the other requirements, you will need to obtain a professional letter of recommendation for your nursing school application to be considered complete. This letter must be written and submitted by a supervisor, professor, advisor, mentor, or another individual who can speak to your qualifications for the nursing program. This letter should highlight your academic abilities, personal attributes, and potential for success in the nursing profession. This letter will be requested and submitted directly through the NursingCAS website.

When requesting a letter of recommendation on a timeline, it is important to be considerate of the person writing the letter. Here are some tips to help you navigate that process effectively:

    1. Plan Ahead: It is important to start the process as early as you can and give your reference at least one month's notice. If your reference has ample time to write your letter, they will be able to make your recommendation more personalized and unique.
    2. Choose the Right Person: Choose a reference that knows you well and can speak positively about your attributes as a student and your potential as a nurse.
    3. Prepare your References. Once you choose your references, be sure to inform them about the process and that they will be completing the reference electronically. We recommend getting their preferred email address and asking that they monitor that inbox for your reference request (which will come from nursingcasinfo@nursingcas.org), including any junk or spam folders.
    4. Be Specific: Be clear with your reference from the start about the application deadline and the purpose of your letter of recommendation. If you want them to include specific information about you or your relationship, let them know!
    5. Offer Relevant Materials: Provide your reference with any materials that may assist them in writing your letter. This could include a resume, transcript, statement of personal goals, or any other relevant documentation.
    6. Express Gratitude: If your reference of choice agrees to write you a letter, make sure to thank them for their time and effort. A handwritten note often goes a long way when expressing your gratitude.
    7. Respect their Decision: If your reference of choice declines to write your letter of recommendation, respectfully thank them for considering your request and move on to your second choice. Don't take this decision personally, they may have their own reasons for declining.
    8. Follow up Courteously: If the application deadline is getting close and your reference has not submitted their letter, you can send them a friendly email reminder.

Remember that requesting a letter of recommendation is a favor, so be respectful and considerate of your reference's schedule. Being proactive and communicative with your reference will give you the best chance of receiving a positive letter of recommendation.
